Frankly speaking, I have been here twice, one of my visits was something triggered by curiosity and a high level of stupidity. I dare to say so just because that time I just bought a ticket, I will repeat: just bought and spent my precious 50$ SGD as if I was a visitor with a healthy bank account. As I arrived there, I strolled through the amusement park, took some pictures and tried some attractions which were specifically made for a person under 10 years old (FYI, at that time I was 22). So, I was standing in the middle of a long and endless queue full of kids.
Second visit happened when I was 24. It was better as I had a plan for what I would do there. The price was still the same - 50$ SGD. Like any other amusement park, Universal Studios offers some attractions. Each of them has its own theme, Madagascar, Shrek (Far Far Away), The Mummy Returns (Ancient Egypt), Jurassic Park (Lost World), Battlestar Galactica and Transformers (Sci-fi city). If you have toddlers or kids, you can bring them to Madagascar and Shrek, but I am not so sure about the other four.
MADAGASCAR – A crate adventure
In this attraction you can embark on an unforgettable river ride adventure, or shortly speaking, an adventure about animal smuggling, because as I understood it Alex, Marty, Melman and Gloria were in the box and they tried to escape and come back to their homeland. But of course, kids might not understand it. Or maybe my imagination was too high?
You will ride the crate on a long dark river. Kids will like it but I have some kind of paranoia as I’ve got a not-so-nice experience in Indonesia. I did go on a ride like this and I thought that it would be fun. Yeah it was fun, if only they didn’t surprise me with a sudden long drop in the dark...
At the end of the journey, when your crate is ready to pass the gate, the water curtain looks worrisome, but believe me, it’s made for that purpose. The curtain will open automatically as the crate approaches. My suggestion: don’t forget to smile all the way as they have a camera to take your picture. I forgot about it and as I saw it on the screen, I pretended that it wasn’t me (you can buy that picture if you want, but I didn’t, of course...).
SHREK – PUSS IN BOOTS’ GIANT JOURNEY (ROLLER COASTER)
This roller coaster is for babies. But I won’t deny that I shrieked as if I rode a big roller coaster. I was again just paranoid as the seat and seatbelt were so small. The roller coaster has its own name – Enchanted Airways Roller Coaster, in the shape of a dragon, if you remember which dragon I meant. That’s why the design of the building was made to be similar to a train station, with a time table, a ticket booth with the Gingerbread Man as a ticket seller and so forth.
The further we walked, the scarier the attractions got. Jurassic Park has 3 attractions: Canopy Flyer, Dino-Soarin’ and Jurassic Park Adventure. I only tried 2 of them as I thought that Dino-Soarin’ is for kids and moreover, the queue made me lose the last of my patience. Based on the name, you might be able to guess that the canopy flyer is made of some seats on the reel. Indeed. So, for riding this canopy, you are required to take off whichever shoes or sandals you wear. It wouldn’t be nice when you are walking under the canopy to suddenly get some free sandals or a rain of sandals on your head, would it?
Dino-Soarin’ is made of some Pteranodon going around and round like a carousel. I don’t need to describe further more I think.
And the last one is Jurassic Park Adventure. The queue succeeded in draining my patience, but as my husband insisted to try, I had no idea how to refuse. Moreover, I had spent my 50$ SGD, hadn’t I? So, why should I refuse?
Getting bored listening to the Lost World anthem and finally getting a Zeigarnik Effect, I saw a booth that was selling ponchos. That time I was laughing out loud, thinking that anyone who bought it was really exaggerating. That was before I knew.
The raft was round and the stream was quite fast, also if I can add, the sound effect was cool and the surprise was surprising enough. The raft was flowing with the stream, entering a closed dark building. I started not to like it and my guess was right, I found.... (I won’t tell you here). But make sure that you choose the right place. My husband chose the wrong place and when the raft was sliding down, he got a good spa-bath bonus. When we walked out of the attraction, he was the one and only person wearing a really wet clothes.
ANCIENT EGYPT (ROLLER COASTER)
Until now, I still can’t decide whether this attraction is cool, stunning, amazing or bloodcurdling. At first, I didn’t have any idea what kind of attraction that this zone offered me. I just put my bag in the locker, went inside through the labyrinth and found myself in the dark-and-chilly area. And there, the ride was waiting us. Then I started not to like it as my blood was pumping hard. Yeah, it was a roller coaster in the dark. What’s worse than rolling around at a high speed in the darkness?
If only there had been a producer of scary movies or something like that, he would have offered me a contract to play one of his characters or at least recorded my shriek and used it for a really creepy movie. It was horrible when you could see nothing and it kept moving forward with high speed. I was just afraid that my head would hit something or suddenly my seat belt was loosened and I was going to fly somewhere as the consequence.
My suggestion: You shouldn’t skip this attraction. I would be glad to try once or twice more if I come back to USS.
PS: I won't give you any video for this because I don't want to spoil the surprise. (also I don't have any good video to show).
TRANSFORMERS THE RIDE
Transformers: The Ride 3D is based on the Transformers film franchise, so sometimes you may feel as if you are Megan Fox or Shia Labeouf. For me: no, of course! After visiting Ancient Egypt, I could feel that my knees were still shaking like crazy. And then, we decided that transformers was the last for that day. We stood in a line patiently, hoping that finally we could see the ride or something like that. But it was worse, much worse than a queue in a movie premiere! I kept standing on my tiptoes, doing stretching and glancing at the queue every ten minutes. We moved deeply into the building, to every section of the building so you can see how bad the Decepticons were and how good the Autobots were. Frankly speaking, Decepticons were far more cool for me. Anyway, we walked slowly, for about 2 hours until finally we reached the ride. It was a small car for 9 people with 3 long seats. I was amazed by how real they could make the show, you can feel the smoke, and the screen was so big so you could feel that it was real instead of just a simulation.
Overall this ride is worth to try. Yet, maybe you need to choose the time so you won’t need to spend your whole evening standing and watching people watching a Transformers movie on a small television.
CAFÉ and Restaurants
Many kinds of restaurants and cafés are available inside the area. You might already understand that they won’t offer you cheap and reasonable prices. I myself only took some sausages and sandwiches. It was delicious but almost made me broke. If you have kids, you might indulge your kids a bit here as they have many stores and stores full of interesting things even for a 25-year-old ‘kid’ like me.
How to get there?
If you read my previous post (IF, I don’t hope that much, though), you must remember that I mentioned Harbor Front. Yep, this is the port to the Sentosa Island. At the Harbor Front, take an exit to VivoCity and proceed to level 3 to board the Sentosa Express. Alight 1 stop later at Waterfront Station. Walk straight until you find “Chili’s” restaurant and there you can see the entrance!
Where to eat then if you are not a visitor with a healthy bank account?
I suggest you not go to Singapore then. They offer you unreasonable prices, but if you have guts, I can recommend some places for eating after having a terrible ride in USS. You can go to the top level of Harbor Front, there close to the big balcony overlooking the port you can find a food court with various choices for food.
HAVE A GREAT AND ENJOYABLE RIDE!
